Jönköping Student Union at the Swedish National Union of Students’ General Assembly

Last Thursday to Sunday, four representatives from Jönköping Student Union went to Linköping for the annual meeting of the Swedish National Union of Students.

The Swedish National Union of Students, or Sveriges Förenade Studentkårer (SFS) is the collective student voice in Sweden representing 47 student unions and about 275 000 members. Their General Assembly is the highest decision making body where all member unions are represented. Our Vice President Toni, along with President-elect Jacob, Integration Coordinator Louise and Board member Adam went together to represent the students of JU.

Before this, there were a lot of preparations to be done. Hours of meetings with discussions about our standpoint and what would be best for our students; online meetings with other unions (and lots of coffee) went into the work. Finally, at the four day conference, the main points were elections of the SFS Presidium and Board, statute and membership fee changes, and budget approval for the new year.

Our opinions may not have always been the same resulting in many constructive debates but we expect the Presidium and Board to continue their important work they have ahead of them. As this advocacy work is incredibly important for students’ rights in Sweden, JSU intends to focus more on it following the Assembly. The aim is to open a call for students to join the team already now and start working on our future influence on a national level.
